Game censorship

Post by MercFHire on Sun Apr 22, 2012 3:57 pm

I've just been over at the official forums, this is a bit worrying.
I think the blood features are a nice touch, and the only reason i'm still seeing them in OBT is because the english client is remembering the settings I used on the CBT and only the blood slider is missing at this point, but when the game goes live it will be removed.
If something this small is getting censored, along with retexturing of dungeons, map areas like popolion with the blood fountains, what other future content can we expect to be censored or even worst case scenario, left out completely if deemed too mature?

actually blood wont be entirely removed, it will remain as it is now.
The lucid display setting was locked to setting 1 and the slider for it removed. (blood wopnt splat on screen/stay on ground).
There is a 200 pages ragethread and numerous topics about this on the official forums, wich is a good thing. Not all of it is so called constructive critism but aleast this way frogster feels the dissattisfaction of the community.

As retarded as it is, frogster does not have any staff besides the CM's working in the weekend.
Lets hope we will get the response we all been hoping for today.

Post made by Raven, Head CM on the official forums.

Hello everyone,

we're aware that there are still open questions regarding the upcoming release of TERA. We would like to use this thread and update it with the latest updates as we receive them.

Q: Will the in-game items (for example the lion of the Collector's Edition) be available for all characters or just one character per account?

A: Those in-game items will be available to all your characters. So you'll be able to use the lion for example with all your characters on your account.

Q: There are plenty of discussions about the blood in TERA at this stage, what is the official statement and status about it?

A: The initial statement about this can be found here. We brought this topic up again this morning (Monday) at the upper management level. There will be meetings about it in our company in order to discuss possible further steps. As soon as we have any update on that matter, we'll inform you about it. Please be aware, that it might take some time until we have an update for you available.

Q: There are some rumors about the white graphical elements in the open beta. Is it true that these are exchanged textures and that they are related to the blood discussion?

A: No, these issues occured with the new open beta build for all regions. This is just a graphical issues with the latest version and it is not related to the blood discussion.

Q: Another rumor is about changes to the castanic models, what is that about?

A: There were changes made to the castanic model, but those changes were made month ago for all versions of TERA, including the korean version.

Q: There were some issues with the chat filter during open beta, are you aware of that?

A: Yes, this issue is related to a filter software and we'll look into that matter.

Q: What about the guild emblem? Why is it currently not possible to upload a custom logo?

A: This function is currently disabled. We're trying to work on a proper solution with Bluehole. The function was deactivated due to some legal reasons. The current system was abused to upload images which violated certain laws.

Q: The pre-character-creation (PCC) / name reservation is pretty close, same goes for the head start, when can we expect further information about these two topics?

A: We'll inform you about the details and timeframe as soon as we have the final internal timeline available. We'll try to get this information to you on Tuesday or Wednesday the latest. The server setup might change compared to the open beta, depending on the final results.

Q: Will the Guild vs. Guild system be active on PvE servers?

A: At this point this is still under discussion between the developers of TERA and the publishers. The current status is therefore, that the system won't be included on PvE servers.

Q: I found a t-cat NPC in the game during open beta and this NPC offered different items, is this some sort of a cash shop?

A: This NPC was only left in one location and will be removed for the head start and launch. The t-cat system won't be included for the launch in Europe. The system is not some sort of a cash shop it is more a kind of a veteran reward program/npc. If this system will be included in Europe, we'll inform you about this.

To this, I made the following reply.

Thank you for creating this thread Raven,

So far I've sat back and see how this would evolve and this will be my first post regarding this matter.

Since the removal, or actually the diminishing of the blood effect there has been alot of activity on the forums about this topic.
Having read somewhere that Frogster does not have supporting staff available during the weekends,
the moderators have been moderating the forums behind the scenes, locking or removing entire threads and posts.
I can only assume these threads and posts violated the forum rules in one way or the other,
but what I can say for certain is that it has nothing to do with 'censoring/trying to cover something up',
as some people tend to believe, since there are numerous topics about this issue that are not removed or locked.
The mods are simply doing their jobs and Raven did the only thing he could, and should have done.
And that's monitoring the community and the forums, reading trough all the constructive critism, suggestions and also the flame posts made by people, to compile all this info into a report that he gave the upper management first thing monday morning.
I know everyone would like their question to be answered sooner than later, and the little to none communication during the weekend has done your opinion no good.
But don't think for a second Raven does not want to answer all our questions, he simply can't at this time.
Having worked as a CM for Gameforge myself, I know there are some things you cannot say, but most things you simply don't have a answer to yourself.
So I'm kindly asking the community to grit their teeth and keep their anger inside, atleast until we are given more information about the subject.
Making more and more posts about this will only cost them more work and time, and that time is better spend helping people with other issues or problems they can actually answer.

Don't get me wrong, I am in no way satisfied with the current events myself, and should Frogster fail to respond appropiately in a short timeframe I would be the first on the frontline encouraging people to unleash the bottled up rage to confirm that the upper management gives this issue the proper attention it needs.

We clearly stated our issues and dissatisfaction, the ball is now in their court, so let's take a break and catch our breath shall we ?

Regards,

Drasqo

New update on the situation from Raven:

Update 2: To give you an update on the current status. We had several meetings today about the blood situation. We came up with different options, which will be discussed with our top management and Bluehole to check out the possibilities. We'll give you an update on the situation tomorrow as soon as possible!

However, our thread is in large detail. An answer to is would be only in its place.

Hi,

just to answer your question. We don't force a rating on a product, when
we handed TERA to PEGI and USK they played the game and gave it a
rating of 12+, that's why the game is running with an age rating of 12+.
We didn't say give us a rating of 12+, that's not how the process
works.

We also know that the game got ratings of 17+ in other regions and this
topic was also part of todays meetings. Please wait for tomorrow, when
we'll be able to inform you about the next update after the discussions
from top management between the different companies and also the
feedback from Bluehole on that matter. Changes to the game always
involve Bluehole!

Thank you for your patience on that matter.

P.S. Please stop posting the thread several times into this topic, we're aware of it and have seen the results.

Edit: Here is our news about the first time we mentioned the PEGI 12 rating (1st of February 2012).

Thank you

Guess we'll find out more tomorrow.

Still waiting on a reply for the blood/censor issue!

Re: Game censorship

Post by Drasqo on Tue Apr 24, 2012 5:24 am

something interesting/relevant posted by a forum member

[color:6369=black !important]Dear community,

I didnt like waiting for Frogster so I did some research myself and
called Nicam. Nicam is the company that did the ratings for Pegi and are
in the Netherlands. The friendly man gave me a lot of extra
information. Lets sum it up eh?! :

- Frogster handed the game over to PEGI and they tested it thoroughly, giving it a 12+ rating.
- Frogster accepted that rating, publishers /always/ want a low rating, as low as possible.
- PEGI now assumes that Frogster did not show /all/ of the content, as
they have received tons of complaints about this already.
- Nicam gave me an email adress that I could email with my complaint +
motivation. Then a certain commitee would look at the complaint and
possibly RE-RATE the game!
- Rerating the game is easier than Frogster claimed. TERA can still be
launched as a pegi 12 game while Pegi is working on a rerating already.
So in theory the launch can continue and within a few weeks the game
gets a new rating.
- Re-rating does not take TOO long. Wont be possible before release but
he said it can take to about a month. It requires different people from
an EU organization to re-rate the game.
- Its unique that a publisher wants a higher rating than given, as usually they want lower ratings.

.... and most importantly.
- Frogster got a rating 12+, meaning the game was APPROVED in the state
it was (before the cencorship). Therefore Frogster did not HAVE to
censor anything!!!!

---------------------------------------------------

So, that were the answers I was given. I would STRONGLY urge the
community to email Nicam as well, with a detailed explanation as to why
you think the rating of pegi 12 is too /low/. But remember to be POLITE.
Its not their fault, I have the impression that they honestly want to
help us and are willing to RE-RATE the game. Only with a constructive
email to them you can get them to take us seriously.

The email adress you can send your letters to is : removed

Thank you and together we can do this! I know we can.

Signed:

Proxima

Also, due to the shitstorm caused on the forums, it grows and grows every minute.
There are several game media websites now following this story and posting articles on the issue.

I think this will even add to the amount of pressure frogster is currently facing, but I strongly hope this will only improve the situation, and not wreck the entire launch of tera EU.

[color:f3dd=blue !important]As stated before we'll have an
update most-likely today. Everybody is still working on that. However
please be patient and stick to the language the sub-forums uses.

Und es auch nochmal auf deutsch zu haben, es wir wahrscheinlich heute
noch ein Update dazu geben. Wir arbeiten immernoch alle daran.
Nichtsdestotrotz habt bitte etwas Geduld.

Re: Game censorship

Post by Drasqo on Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:43 am

Hello to all TERA fans out there,

Last weekend, there were many questions and discussions on all
TERA-related boards regarding the recent changes to the game. We are now
able to provide more details on these issues.

We want to let you know that we heard your message, loud and clear.
We sincerely ask you to understand that we take all these issues very
seriously.

As you have all noticed, the blood effect slider was removed from the
OBT client. We want first of all to apologise to you for not
communicating this change as it should have been. We understand the
importance of being transparent with our community.

Developing and publishing a game requires the cooperation of many
teams, so in order to give you comprehensive and accurate feedback, some
issues need to be discussed and deliberated amongst our various
departments. And this particular case underwent the same procedure which
led to a response time longer than you had expected.

After intensive deliberation both internally and with our developer,
we have decided that the gore slider will be back with the original
three different graduations and blood will still be spread on the ground
during combat. This change will take effect shortly after the release
of the game, planned for the middle of May, through a patch. And just
to be clear, the game-play experience will not be compromised and none
of the TERA environments were or would have to be modified due to this
change.

The European release version of the game will still have to be
slightly different from the North American and Korean build: the only
threat to our 12+ classification was the blood splattered on your screen
when you are slaying certain monsters. This effect is slightly modified
in the European version.
Another comment we read a lot this weekend
was linked to some alleged modifications on some physical attributes and
some armour pieces. We would like to give you some insight on those
topics.

Elins were once more pointed at. Yes, the appearance of the Elins has
been changed in both northern American and European version of the
game. Not to comply with a demand from any official board, but because
those characters in particular could have attracted to the game a
population of unsavoury users, and it is part of our responsibility to
protect our younger audiences from them. All partners involved in the
project decided to ask Bluehole Studios for a solution, so they created
new textures and designs for Elin wear. We are sure you all agree that
this effort for child protection was the right thing to do. We all did,
here, at Frogster.

Some of you also raised questions over reduction in the breast size
of certain races, or some armour, which were not as suggestive as they
used to be…, in the very first Korean TERA closed beta. We want to
underline the fact that these changes are present in all versions of the
game worldwide, including the original Korean version.

Many of you have a long history with MMO games, and we are sure you
are familiar with updates and changes. Unfortunately, we might have to,
at some point, postpone the release of certain features, because we feel
like they need some more balancing or further testing. This is the case
for the guild emblem feature. It has never been declared by any
Frogster official that this feature was going to be removed permanently.
It is only temporarily absent from the game, until a solution is found
to allow a proper moderation of its use, so we can avoid you being
exposed to potentially illegal or offensive content. We have a
responsibility towards our audience we take very seriously.

Several possibilities are currently being considered, like a webpage
added to the official website which would allow players to submit their
emblem for the community managers’ approval before it is actually
introduced into the game, or a community approval system asking a
committee of players to make sure the submitted logos match the game
rules. All the solutions we come up with would need an intervention of
the developer at some point of the process. It might take some time, but
we are already working on it.

Again, we apologise for not informing you in advance on this one, and
we will do our best to keep you in the loop on further developments. We
really hope that we have addressed the concerns you have about TERA.

Wishing you a very pleasant last day on the open beta,

Your Frogster Team

Re: Game censorship

Post by Drasqo on Tue Apr 24, 2012 9:43 am

copy of another post I made.

[color:e8ba=black !important]Hiya, Drasqo here. Sharing my 2 cents from time to time.

I feel Frogster really dodged a bullet here, but it still scraped them and will definatly leave a scar.
Exceptions excluded, most rage will slowly die down and the new forums will help with this process.
Alot less people will cancel their subs/move to NA because of the
letter, and while 'giving frogster another chance' might be somewhat
overdoing it, I imagine most will at least stick with their 30 days and
see what the future brings.

The main lesson here that was taught and learned, is the power of masses.
It's exactly why Anonymous is succesfull, and the same 'core' thing happened right here.
It is only coincidental that it was a issue related to 'censorship'.
The 'suits' in power enforce something without the consent of the
general populace, so they rise up, unify behind one common goal/idea and
revolt as a result, using media pressure to exert their 'peaceful'
resistance.

"None of us are as powerfull as all of us"

Frogster definatly did the right thing here, and we can be certain they
will think twice about reducing/removing something the next time.
They adapted well to this but I don't feel they are in the clear just
yet, as some people might stick with the 'We do not forgive, we do not
forget'.

Time will tell.

Thank you Frogster for showing a first sign of good faith by re-instating the blood slider.

Signed,

Drasqo

*As always, the contents of this post are based entirely on my opinion, and my opinion only.*

All in all, I'de say a WIN is in order.
